"Am I tall?" is a surprisingly hard question to answer, because the honest reply is always "compared to whom?"
At 180 cm you are tall for a woman almost anywhere on earth, comfortably above average for a man in the United States, roughly average for a man in the Netherlands, and genuinely towering for a man in parts of Southeast Asia. The number hasn't changed. The reference population has.
A height percentile fixes this by giving you a single figure that already accounts for who you're being measured against. It is the difference between "I'm 180 cm" and "I'm taller than 76% of adult men in my country", and the second statement is the one that actually answers the question.

📊 What a Height Percentile Actually Means
A height percentile tells you what percentage of a reference population is shorter than you.
If you are at the 75th percentile, 75 out of 100 people in your reference group are shorter than you and 25 are taller. If you are at the 10th percentile, only 10% are shorter. The 50th percentile is the median, the exact middle of the distribution.
Three things people routinely get wrong about this:
A percentile is not a score. The 90th percentile is not "better" than the 40th. It is a position on a distribution, nothing more. Growth charts get read as report cards constantly and it causes needless anxiety.
The reference population is everything. A percentile is meaningless without knowing what group it's drawn from. Adult men in the US? Girls aged 11 in the UK? The same height produces wildly different percentiles across those groups.
Percentiles are not evenly spaced in centimetres. This is the big one. Moving from the 50th to the 60th percentile might take 2 cm. Moving from the 95th to the 99th might take 5 cm. Height follows a bell curve, so the population is densely packed in the middle and thins out sharply at the edges.
That last point explains something people find counterintuitive: the difference between being average and being noticeably tall is smaller than it feels. A man at 183 cm is only 8 cm above the US average, yet he is in the top 15% of the population.

The six-foot question. Six feet is 183 cm, and it sits at roughly the 85th percentile for American men. That means about 15% of adult US men are six feet or taller. Far fewer than most people assume. The figure feels common because tall men are disproportionately visible in sport, film, and public life.

Notice how compressed the female distribution is. The gap between the 5th and 95th percentile is 23 cm for women and 24 cm for men, similar spread, but centred about 13 cm lower.
A woman at 178 cm is in the top 1%. A man at 178 cm is around the 62nd percentile, barely above average. Same height, radically different social experience, and the percentile is what captures that.

👶 Why Children's Percentiles Work Differently
Adult percentiles compare you to other adults. Children's percentiles compare a child to other children of the same age and sex, and that reference shifts every single month.
This is why a growing child can stay at exactly the 60th percentile for years while gaining 40 cm of actual height. The percentile isn't measuring growth. It's measuring position relative to peers who are also growing.
Clinically, this is the point. What matters in paediatric growth monitoring is not which percentile a child sits on but whether they stay on it. A child tracking steadily along the 25th percentile is developing normally. A child who drops from the 75th to the 25th over eighteen months warrants a conversation with a doctor, even though the 25th percentile is a perfectly ordinary place to be.
The LMS method
Modern growth charts don't use simple averages, because children's height distributions are skewed, not a neat symmetrical bell curve. The CDC and WHO use a technique called the LMS method, which describes the distribution at each age with three parameters:
- L: the skew of the distribution
- M: the median
- S: the coefficient of variation, or how spread out it is

🧠 What Percentiles Don't Tell You
A percentile is a position, not a verdict. Some things it explicitly does not measure:
- Health. A short adult at the 5th percentile is usually just short. Height percentile alone diagnoses nothing.
