How the Height Difference Is Calculated
Both heights are converted to centimeters, then the absolute difference is converted back into every common unit:

We convert both heights to a common unit (centimeters), take the absolute difference, then convert that difference into feet/inches, meters, and a percentage. The percentage is the height gap divided by the shorter person's height — e.g. an 8 in (20.3 cm) gap between a 5'4" and a 6'0" person is about 12.5%.
What is a typical height difference between couples?
Studies on different-sex couples commonly find an average gap of around 5–6 inches (13–15 cm), though real couples vary widely in both directions — same-height and reverse-gap pairings are entirely normal.
