How to Measure Your Height Accurately at Home
Most home height measurements are wrong by a centimetre or more. Here is the clinical technique, the head position that trips everyone up, and why the time of day changes your answer.

If you have ever been measured at two different places and got two different numbers, neither of them was necessarily wrong. Height measurement is more sensitive to technique than people expect, and a careless measurement can miss by well over a centimetre.
There are three things that cause almost all of the error: posture, head angle, and time of day. Get those right and you can measure yourself at home to within a couple of millimetres of what a clinic would record.
What You Need
Very little. A wall, a hard flat floor, a pencil, and a tape measure or steel ruler.
What you specifically want to avoid is the classic soft setup: carpet underfoot, a book balanced on your head at an angle, and a bare wall with skirting board at the bottom. Each of those introduces its own error, and they tend to stack in the same direction.
The clinical instrument is a stadiometer, a wall-mounted board with a sliding horizontal headpiece. Properly calibrated, one is accurate to about ±2 mm. You are trying to approximate what it does: a true vertical reference, a rigid horizontal surface on the crown of the head, and a body positioned consistently.
The Method
1. Take off your shoes and socks. Also remove any hair ornaments, buns, headbands or head coverings that sit between the crown of your head and the measuring surface. Loose hair is fine, but flatten anything voluminous.
2. Find a hard floor against a flat wall. Carpet compresses under your heels and will cost you a few millimetres. If the wall has a skirting board, stand with your heels against the skirting and measure from the floor, or find a doorframe instead.
3. Stand with four points of contact. Heels, buttocks, shoulder blades, and the back of your head should all touch the wall. This is the single most important step, and it is where most home measurements go wrong. Anyone with a natural forward curve at the neck or shoulders will need to consciously flatten against the wall.
4. Position your feet. Heels together and touching the wall, with toes apart at roughly a 60-degree angle. Knees straight and fully extended, but not locked hard.
5. Set your head position. Look straight ahead at a point on the opposite wall at eye level. The reference used clinically is the Frankfort plane: an imaginary horizontal line running from the bottom of your eye socket to the top opening of your ear canal. When that line is parallel to the floor, your head is in the correct position.
This matters more than it sounds. Tilting your chin up or down by a small amount changes the recorded height by several millimetres, and people naturally lift their chin when they are trying to be tall.
6. Breathe in and hold. Take a deep breath and stand tall on the inhale. This is standard clinical practice and it produces a consistent, repeatable stretch.
7. Mark and measure. Have someone place a rigid flat object, a book spine, a ruler, or a set square, firmly on the crown of your head at a true right angle to the wall. Mark the underside. Then measure from the floor to the mark with a tape held vertically.
8. Repeat three times. Take the measurement three times and average the results. If the three differ by more than half a centimetre, your technique is varying somewhere, most likely in head position.
Measuring Alone
It is harder without help, but workable.
Stand with your back to a doorframe. Hold a set square or a hardback book flat against the top of your head with one edge pressed against the frame, keeping it level. Slide it down until it touches your crown, hold it steady, step out carefully without moving it, and mark the frame at the underside.
The main risk is tilting the book as you step away. Pressing it firmly against the frame the whole time helps.
Why You Are Taller in the Morning
You are, and it is not a small effect.
The intervertebral discs in your spine are largely water. Standing, sitting and moving through the day compresses them gradually, squeezing fluid out and reducing your total height. Lying down overnight lets them rehydrate and expand again.
Research on diurnal variation puts the typical loss at around 0.5 to 1 cm over the course of a day, with some measurements reporting up to 2 cm. Most of the loss happens in the first few hours after getting up, which is why the difference between 7 am and 11 am is larger than between noon and 6 pm.
Practical consequences:
- Measure in the morning if you want your maximum height, and always at the same time of day if you are tracking change over time.
- Never compare a morning measurement to an evening one and conclude anything has happened.
- If you are tracking a child's growth, keep the time of day consistent between measurements. Otherwise the daily fluctuation can be larger than a month of actual growth.
Common Mistakes
- Measuring on carpet. Costs a few millimetres and varies with pile depth.
- Chin lifted. The most common single error, and it always inflates the number.
- Using a soft book that flexes or holding it at an angle rather than square to the wall.
- Heels not against the wall. Standing even slightly forward tilts the whole body and shortens the reading.
- Hair. A bun, thick curls or a topknot can add a surprising amount.
- Measuring after a workout. Heavy loaded exercise compresses the spine further, so you will read shorter than usual for a while afterwards.

Most people only ever measure their height casually, which is fine until you need the number for something: a medical form, a percentile check, a growth record for a child. Ten minutes and a bit of care gets you a figure you can actually rely on.
