Here is a fact that breaks people's brains the first time they hear it: Goku is 175 cm tall. 5 feet 9 inches. That is it. The most powerful being in one of the most popular franchises ever made is, in real-world terms, an unremarkably average-height man. He would be slightly taller than the median American adult male and slightly shorter than the average Dutchman.

Vegeta is shorter still, at 164 cm (5′5″). The Prince of All Saiyans, the man whose entire personality is built on being the biggest presence in any room, is shorter than the average woman in the Netherlands.

Anime does something strange to our sense of scale. Characters feel enormous because of what they do, how they are framed, and the sheer volume of energy they radiate. Then you check the databook and find out your favourite warrior would need to look up at a professional volleyball player.

This guide collects the official heights for every major Dragon Ball fighter, ranks them properly, converts everything to feet and inches, and lets you drop any of them into a visual comparison against your own height.

📏 Where These Numbers Come From

A quick note before the tables, because this trips up a lot of arguments online.

Dragon Ball heights come from official databooks, primarily the Daizenshuu guides published alongside the series, rather than from measuring frames of animation. This matters because on-screen proportions drift constantly. Character designs changed noticeably between the original Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball Super, and individual animators have always taken liberties with scale for dramatic effect.

Three complications worth knowing:

  1. Age changes everything. Goku is a child for a large chunk of the original series. The 175 cm figure is his adult height.
  2. Transformations change height. Frieza's forms have genuinely different measurements. Super Saiyan forms add bulk and, in some depictions, height.
  3. Some characters have no official figure at all and circulate online purely as fan estimates.

Where a character's height is contested, this guide uses the most widely cited official figure and says so.

🐉 Dragon Ball Character Heights: Ranked Tallest to Shortest

Ranked tallest first. Where characters share a height, they are grouped together.

RankCharacterHeight (ft/in)Height (cm)

3Nappa7′0″213 cm
4Broly (Legendary)6′7″200 cm
5Raditz6′2″187 cm
6Tien Shinhan6′2″187 cm
7Yamcha6′0″183 cm
8Gohan (Adult)5′9″176 cm
9Goku5′9″175 cm
10Android 185′7″170 cm
11Future Trunks5′7″170 cm
12Master Roshi5′5″165 cm
13Bulma5′5″165 cm
14Vegeta5′5″164 cm
15Chi-Chi5′4″163 cm
16Majin Buu (Fat Form)5′3″160 cm
17Frieza (First Form)5′2″158 cm
18Krillin5′0″153 cm
19Frieza (Final Form)5′0″153 cm

The spread here is the interesting part. From Krillin at 153 cm to Piccolo at 226 cm is a 73 cm gap, nearly two and a half feet. That is roughly the difference between a short adult woman and a person taller than any NBA player currently active.

🥋 The Big Surprises

Piccolo Is Enormous

At 226 cm (7′5″), Piccolo is taller than Shaquille O'Neal. He is taller than almost every professional basketball player who has ever lived. Yao Ming, at 229 cm, has about three centimetres on him and that is it.

This is genuinely hard to see on screen because Piccolo is so often framed alongside other Namekians, or standing at a distance, or seated in meditation. But put him next to Goku and the difference is over 50 cm. Goku would be looking up at roughly chin height.

Frieza Gets Smaller as He Gets Stronger

This is one of the best design decisions in the entire franchise and most people never consciously register it.

Frieza's first form is 158 cm. His intermediate forms bulk up dramatically. The second form in particular is a hulking, horned mass. And then his final form shrinks back down to 153 cm, smaller than where he started, sleek and almost childlike.

It is a deliberate inversion of the usual power-scaling shorthand. Every other villain in the genre gets bigger as the threat escalates. Frieza gets smaller, and the effect is far more unsettling. The most dangerous version of him is the one that could look Krillin in the eye.

Vegeta Is Shorter Than Bulma

Vegeta: 164 cm. Bulma: 165 cm. It is only a single centimetre, but it is canon, and it recontextualises a great many scenes.

It also puts Vegeta 11 cm below Goku: a gap he is, in-universe, extremely aware of. Much of the Saiyan prince's screen presence is achieved through posture, framing, and sheer attitude rather than physical size.

Krillin Is Not Actually That Short

Krillin reads as tiny because he stands next to Saiyans constantly. But at 153 cm, he is about the height of a typical 12-year-old, or a short adult woman. In a normal room full of normal people, Krillin would be short, not remarkable.

His perceived size is almost entirely a function of his company.

🌍 How Dragon Ball Characters Compare to Real People

This is where the numbers get genuinely fun, because Dragon Ball's cast maps onto real-world heights more neatly than you would expect.

CharacterHeightReal-world equivalent
Krillin153 cmShorter than the average adult woman
Frieza (Final)153 cmSame
Vegeta164 cmAverage adult woman in the US
Goku175 cmAverage adult man in the US
Yamcha183 cmTall, around the 90th percentile for men
Nappa213 cmTaller than almost every NBA player
Piccolo226 cmWithin 3 cm of Yao Ming

The headline stays the same: Goku is a completely average-height man. The average adult male in the United States is around 175 cm. Goku is 175 cm. The strongest character in the franchise is, dimensionally speaking, the man standing next to you in a queue.

💡 Fun Facts and Observations

  • Goku and Gohan are within 1 cm of each other as adults, 175 cm and 176 cm. The son edges out the father.
  • Nappa and Cell are the same height at 213 cm, despite looking nothing alike structurally.
  • Piccolo is the only character over 220 cm in the core cast, making him a genuine outlier rather than part of a "tall tier."
  • Master Roshi is 165 cm, exactly the same as Bulma, and one centimetre taller than Vegeta.
  • Height in Dragon Ball is almost entirely uncorrelated with power level. The strongest characters cluster around average human height while several of the tallest (Nappa, Raditz) are defeated relatively early.
  • Broly is the tallest Saiyan by a wide margin at 200 cm, which is part of why he reads as monstrous even before transforming.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

1. How tall is Goku?

Goku is 175 cm (5 feet 9 inches) as an adult, according to official Dragon Ball databook figures. This makes him almost exactly average height for an adult man in the United States or the United Kingdom.

2. How tall is Vegeta?

Vegeta is 164 cm (5 feet 5 inches), which places him 11 cm shorter than Goku and one centimetre shorter than Bulma.

3. Who is the tallest Dragon Ball character?

Among the core cast, Piccolo is the tallest at 226 cm (7 feet 5 inches). He is taller than Shaquille O'Neal and within three centimetres of Yao Ming.

4. Who is the shortest Dragon Ball character?

Krillin and Frieza's final form tie at 153 cm (5 feet 0 inches). Krillin is the shortest of the regular Z-Fighters.

5. Why does Frieza get shorter when he transforms?

Frieza's final form is deliberately designed to be smaller and sleeker than his earlier bulked-up forms. It inverts the usual visual shorthand where villains grow larger as they become more dangerous, which makes the final form more unsettling rather than less.

6. Is Goku taller than Vegeta?

Yes. Goku is 175 cm and Vegeta is 164 cm, a difference of 11 cm or about 4.3 inches.

7. Are Dragon Ball heights official or fan estimates?

Most core character heights come from official databooks published alongside the series, primarily the Daizenshuu guides. Some minor characters have no official figure and circulate online as fan estimates only, so treat those with more caution.

8. How tall is Piccolo compared to a real person?

At 226 cm, Piccolo would be one of the tallest people alive. Only a handful of professional basketball players have ever reached that height, and he would tower over the average adult man by roughly 50 cm.

9. Does Super Saiyan change a character's height?

Super Saiyan forms visibly add bulk and, in some depictions, a small amount of height. Official databook figures generally list base-form heights, so the numbers in this guide reflect characters in their standard state.

10. Can I compare anime characters to my own height?

Yes. Our 2D height comparison tool and 3D comparison tool let you enter any name and height, so you can put yourself next to Goku, Piccolo or anyone else on this list.

🐲 Final Thoughts

The lasting lesson of Dragon Ball's height chart is how little height has to do with power. Goku is average. Vegeta is below average. Krillin is short. The tallest characters in the series (Nappa, Raditz, Cell) are all comprehensively beaten by fighters who have to look up at them.

For a franchise built almost entirely around physical confrontation, that is a surprisingly consistent message: size is set dressing, not substance.
